The Happiest Place on Earth

Today was a really special treat. I woke up around 9:15 (did I mention there are blackout blinds on the windows which make it impossible to tell what time it is!) and had breakfast with Cecile. Breakfast is generally Baguette with jam, espresso, and then I have a yogurt but that all everyone else eats. She then took me to the market down the street. It happens every Wednesday and Saturday mornings and it is amazing! Everyone who lives in their community goes and its the same vendors everytime. There are fruit and vegetable vendors, meat vendors, cheese vendors, fish, and then around the outside, there are clothes and shoes and curtains and pretty much everything you could think of. Cecile has specific vendors she goes to each time, so we just went to those and left but next time I'll spend some more time there and take pictures for you. She brought me to the butcher and introduced me to him, I can go and pick up the meat and then she pays for everything at the end of the week. And then we went to the pharmacy and she introduced me to him as well. It was great because he clearly knew lots about diabetes and he told me to come back whenever I get the chance and we will go over how to start ordering what I need.

When we came back from the market, we made "croque monsieur" which is just grilled cheese with ham but with their bread and cheese (and probably all the butter) it tastes 100x better. After lunch, the 5 of us got in the car and drove about 45 mins to Disneyland!! Its on the opposite side of the city, but instead of going around the outside, Xavier went straight through the centre and showed me the Champs Elysee, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre and tons of other sites. There is so much to see here that I am so happy I have so much time to do it all. Everything here is just so beautiful, even just the apartment buildings are so old and pretty.

Anyways once we got to Disneyland, Arnaud, Alex and I got dropped off (Cecile and Xavier went to play golf at the Disney Golf Course!) and we entered the park. It pretty much is exactly the same as the one in California, from what I remember... I was 7. All the rides have the same names and there is a big castle and different sections, like fantasyland, frontier land, adventure land, etc... Another similarity is the crowds, there were thousands of people everywhere. The line ups for rides were mostly over an hour long so after about an hour of aimlessly wandering we decided to each pick one thing that we really wanted to do and just suck it up and wait for it. Since we were in Adventureland, I chose Indiana Jones, and since it had the same name as the one in California, I thought it would be exactly the same, and from what I remember you ride around on a big truck through a cave like area. (family... this is where we got stuck with the holographic boulder). It turns out I was wrong and after a 1 hour wait, we got on a massive roller coaster with big drops and a upside-down loop. From our one hour wait you couldn't see the ride so basically all 3 of us had no idea what we were in for until we were sitting in the cart. Even though I almost lost my lunch, it was really fun. We did a few other rides as the crowds dwindled throughout the day and ended up having a really fun time. My favorite will always be the teacups so I took a few pictures of that.

We didn't get home until pretty late, so we just ate dinner and then Arnaud and I started the 2nd Harry Potter movie. It took us 2 nights to watch the 1st because I kept falling asleep! And sure enough, I fell asleep again last night! We are watching them in french, without even having subtitles! I don't know if its that I am understanding it better now, or just the fact that I have seen the movies about 8 times each and I know them word for word...?

Anyways today is Sunday and after a great sleep, I am going to spend the day relaxing, reading and catching up on emails.
Here are some pictures from yesterday, hope you enjoy.

Love M.

Today the boys took me to the Eiffel Tower and It was pouring rain! We took a bus and then 2 subways and as soon as we got out of the subway it starting raining so hard! The line ups were more than 2 hours long even with the rain, so we ended up walking up. Good exercise and also about a quarter of the price. I took a couple pictures so here they are!

Here at Last!

Hi All,
I finally arrived in Paris yesterday, after delayed flights, 3 movies and no sleep! All in all it was a successful day of travel with no real problems. When I got to the airport here in Paris, Xavier (the dad), Cecile (the mom) and Arnaud (the 11 yr old boy) were waiting for me with a sign. They all gave me hugs and I almost cried from just being so tired and overwhelmed. Luckily their car was big enough for all my bags and the 4 of us. Xavier let me call home right away and even though I woke my mom up, I think she was happy to know I was safe.

I was pretty quiet in the car because I was so tired I could barely think in English, let alone try to put a sentence together in French. Their house is about a 35 minute drive from the airport, in a town called La Garenne Colombe. I was worried it was going to be far from Paris but it is not at all. You can see the Eiffel Tower from the Parent's bedroom. Once we arrived, Cecile had to go to work, but Xavier had taken the day off to make sure I was settled in. I spent some time unpacking in my little studio.

It is in the back of their house, like a garage but it has a bathroom and a room for me. There is lots of room with a tv and stereo. My bed is a pull out couch but it is quite comfortable. After I unpacked I had a 2 hour nap, because I couldn't function I was so exhausted. I woke up around 2 pm, had lunch with Xavier and Arnaud and then we went for a walk around their house. Pretty much everything I will need while I'm here is within a block's distance, bakeries, butchers, pharmacy, grocery, cafes, bars, and anything else necessary. It is pretty cute and everyone seems friendly.

We went to the Post office to send photocopies of my passport to an office that will validate my Visa, and then we went to get me a phone. I got a blackberry for 1 euro! and with their family discount, my plan won't be very expensive at all.

We got home around 6 30 and by then Cecile had returned and with her Alexandre. He is 14 and very nice also. I spent some time chatting with Arnaud about Harry Potter (he has also read the series several times!) and how some of the characters have different names in French. I am going to try to read the books in french while i'm here.

Cecile made mexican burritos for dinner and they were delicious. We talked about plans for the next few days. Alexandre and Arnaud are going to take me into Paris tomorrow to see the Eiffel tower, and then on Saturday we are maybe going to go to DisneyLand! Sometimes the family got talking and I couldn't follow everything that was being said because it was so fast. I could understand the main stuff, but not all the details!

Philippine, the 6 yr old girl, is staying with her grandparents until tuesday so I will tell you about her when I meet her. Apparently she has been talking about all the things we are going to do together for months. Cecile called her last night and as soon as she answered the phone, she said "put Margaux on the Phone!" She seems adorable and I can't wait to meet her.

Anyways, I am off to the Eiffel Tower now, so tonight I will try to post pictures of my little room and some of the stuff we see today!

Miss everyone already!

In the Airport

After 3 months of preparation and planning, the day has finally come. I am sitting in the airport waiting for my flight (which has been delayed 2 hours!) I have a lot of mixed emotions right now, saying goodbye was tough but I am really excited for what's to come. The family is picking me up at the airport tomorrow morning when I arrive, but I am crossing my fingers that their car is big enough for all my bags! Its beginning to look like I may have a few visitors in the next year or so, so lots to look forward to. I will post again tomorrow night, once I have moved in, unpacked and actually met my temporary family. Wish me safe travels!
